Last week concluded our time in Psalm 119. We invested 10 months meditating upon our need to love God's word. This week we will turn our attention to Matthew 23. This is Jesus' last public sermon in which he strongly admonishes the Pharisee's, those who claimed to love God's law of their blindness. This short preaching "mini-series" is designed to ensure we take heed to Jesus admonition in Revelation 3:18.
"I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
Revelation 3:18"
The preeminent person we must pursue is Jesus. When we do that all other relationships will be placed in their proper perspective. The Pharisee's thought their religious separation and ritualistic cleansing would guarantee their standing before God. That was not the case for those who rejected Jesus as Christ. Jesus is the fulfillment of the law they claimed to love but when he was standing with them they rejected him. All their righteous deeds simply made them hypocrites because it is vain to keep the law of God while rejecting the Son of God who is the fulfillment of the law.
As we draw near the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ it is important we pursue the Lord and reject both legalism and lasciviousness as we invest in Christ. This series was born out of my own self examination in light of Revelation 3:18. I don't want to miss what Jesus has for me or you! It is possible Jesus is doing a work in our midst and we are missing it because blindness has set in as it did the Pharisees. My prayer is the next few weeks will renew our understanding of who God is and give us a passion for God's Word so we can found investing in eternity when Jesus returns for his church.
Join us this Sunday July 23rd as we launch into this short series in Matthew.
